West Nile Virus Prevention Tips

The Texas Division of Emergency Management advises that West Nile Virus cases usually occur in mild temperatures during the late Summer or early Fall, but that it is best to take precautions throughout the year.

The Four D's

The "Four D's" should be implemented to defend against West Nile Virus.

Dusk/Dawn

Dusk and Dawn are the times of day in which infected mosquitoes are most active, and when it is best to limit outdoor activities.

Dress

Make sure to dress in long sleeves and pants when outside, spraying thin clothing with repellent.

Deet

Deet is the most effective ingredient to look for when choosing an insect repellent. Follow label instructions and always wear repellent when outdoors.

Drain

Drain standing water on your property to remove mosquito-breeding sites, typically in old tires, flower pots and clogged rain gutters.
